News: Herman off UFC 136; Phan-Garcia Rematch Bumped to Main Card

Dave Herman has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled heavyweight bout with Mike Russow at UFC 136, promotion officials announced Wednesday. As a result, the matchup has been removed from the event’s pay-per-view broadcast and will be replaced by a featherweight rematch between Leonard Garcia and Nam Phan.

Reasons for Herman’s withdrawal were not disclosed, and it is currently unknown if Russow will still compete on the card, which goes down in a mere 10 days.

Emanating from the Toyota Center in Houston, the show will be headlined by a lightweight championship rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. Additionally, the Oct. 8 event will feature a featherweight title scrap pitting Jose Aldo against Kenny Florian, as well as a pivotal middleweight attraction between Brian Stann and Chael Sonnen.

Garcia and Phan (Pictured) first met in December at “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 finale, with Garcia earning a controversial split decision victory. Since that time, Garcia has gone 0-1, falling to Chan Sung Jung via twister at UFC Fight Night 24 in March. The Jackson’s MMA representative is 2-2-1 in his last five bouts, going the distance in each of his last outings, save his loss to “The Korean Zombie.”

Phan has lost four of his last five contests. The 28-year-old has nearly a decade of professional experience under his belt and a pair of UFC bouts to his credit. Following his contentious defeat to Garcia, Phan was bested by former WEC champion Mike Thomas Brown at UFC 133 on Aug. 6. The Californian has faced such notables as Michihiro Omigawa, Josh Thomson and Gesias Cavalcante, and has finished 12 of his 16 career victims by either knockout or submission.
