News: UFC vs Bar Owner + MMA Ban in City

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is accusing a Nebraska bar of illegally televising a fight without permission from the mixed martial arts promoter.

In a lawsuit filed this week, an attorney for the UFC claims The Edge Bar and Grill in Alda showed a live broadcast of the March 19 event, which featured a fight between Jon Jones and Mauricio Rua.

"It is logical to conclude that (the bar) either used an illegal satellite receiver, misrepresented their business establishment as a residence or removed an authorized receiver from one location to a different business location in order to intercept Plaintiff's broadcast," the complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Lincoln says.

Larry Davidson of Elwood, named as The Edge's owner in the lawsuit, did not respond to a message left on the bar's answering machine.

The UFC accuses Davidson and his company of illegally receiving the broadcast, showing the event without distribution rights and violating copyright law.

The promoter is seeking as much as $260,000, plus attorney's fees.

Residents of Watertown vote to end mixed martial arts events in the South Dakota city

WATERTOWN, S.D. — Residents of Watertown have voted to end mixed martial arts events in the city.

KWAT radio reports that Tuesday's vote was 841 people favoring the events and 1,228 people opposing them.

The City Council in May voted 5-3 to allow MMA events, a form of fighting entertainment that some label as barbaric. MMA opponents gathered enough petition signatures to force a citywide vote.

Mixed martial arts fighters use a variety of techniques, borrowing from boxing, wrestling and various forms of martial arts.

Promoter Mike Alama (AWL'-uh-muh) says he'll still hold fights in the Watertown area, but outside the city limits.

I think they have to actively pursue copyright infringement to be able to win future legal battles and file credible lawsuits. $260,000 is quite a lot though! That could crumble a business owner
