News: Edgar vs Maynard III Off UFC 130, Rampage vs Hamill to Headline

Injuries have sidelined both Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, forcing the cancellation of UFC 130's main event fight, MMA Fighting has learned.

UFC president Dana White confirmed to MMA Fighting that both fighters are out.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Edgar had the more serious injury of the two, suffering two broken ribs during training, while Maynard suffered a knee injury.

The bout would have been the last of the trilogy. Maynard won the first bout in April 2008 in a unanimous decision. In January, the rematch ended in an all-time classic, with Maynard nearly knocking out the champion in the first round before Edgar rebounded with a gutsy performance to force a five-round draw.

Maynard-Edgar III is likely to happen in the future, but there is no timetable yet for its scheduling. With the recovery time of both men expected to be in the 6-to-8 week range, White suggested that it could be slotted into an August or September show.

With no replacement fight, Quinton Jackson vs. Matt Hamill will be promoted to the main event, while Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson is the co-main event. A welterweight fight pitting Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story has been moved into the main card from the prelims.

UFC 130 takes place on May 28 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Edgar, Maynard out "six to eight weeks," could meet as soon as August or September

The injuries that forced UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and opponent Gray Maynard out of this month's UFC 130 event aren't of the significant variety.

During a media call today, UFC president Dana White said both fighters likely will be out six to eight weeks.

They could be rebooked for a major event in August or September, according to White.

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported earlier today, UFC officials announced the loss of the Edgar-Maynard fight (and the promotion of a Matt Hamill vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson bout to the headlining slot). Edgar and Maynard were scheduled for a third fight following their draw earlier this year at UFC 125.

UFC 130 takes place May 30 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Edgar vs. Maynard was slated to headline the pay-per-view main card.

Edgar (13-1-1 MMA, 8-1-1 UFC) suffered a rib injury while Maynard (10-0-1 MMA, 8-0-1 UFC) is nursing a knee injury and healing from a facial cut that required stitches.

"It was odd timing," White said of the concurrent injuries.

Currently, UFC 133 (Aug. 6 in Philadelphia) and UFC 135 (Sept. 24, likely in Denver) both could benefit greatly from the Edgar vs. Maynard rebooking. UFC 134 (Aug. 27 in Rio de Janeiro) already is expected to feature a middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and challenger Yushin Okami and appears an unlikely option.

At UFC 125, Edgar attempted to defend his belt and avenge the only defeat of his career, which came to Maynard in 2008. Although Maynard jumped out to an early lead with a first-round knockdown at UFC 125, Edgar survived and ultimately took the fight the distance. The bout ended in an anticlimactic draw and prompted officials to book the third meeting.

From UFC.com: Edgar-Maynard III Postponed; Rampage-Hamill Headlines 130

Rampage vs. Hamill headlines UFC 130 on May 28th after Edgar and Maynard are forced to withdraw with injuries...
The highly-anticipated third bout between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and number one contender Gray Maynard will have to wait a little longer, as it was announced today that both fighters have suffered injuries in training camp that will take them out of the UFC 130 main event on May 28th.

Stepping up into the UFC 130 main event slot is the bout between former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Matt "The Hammer" Hamill, and moving to the Pay-Per-View card will be the Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story welterweight showdown.

In Spike TV prelim action, Tim Boetsch's middleweight debut against Kendall Grove will join the bantamweight fight between Miguel Angel Torres and Demetrious Johnson.

Yeah that sucks, big time! Pettis is the real contender imo not to mention how much fun he is to watch compared Maynard.

I donīt expect miracles from Rampage either, though Iīm hoping for the KO of course.

August September?! Poor us! Poor Pettis! It wouldn't be so bad if it was young Rampage. The card is screaming average. But hopefully we will be surprised.
