News: Erick Silva ‘s DQ will stand, but UFC implementing replay

Remember Erick Silva's bizarre disqualification at UFC 142? The one that caused the Brazilian prospect to go from jubilant to despondent in about .15 seconds? The one that made UFC commentator Joe Rogan call out referee Mario Yamasaki's judgment while in the Octagon? The one that made us all wonder why there's no instant replay in MMA?

Yeah, that one? It won't be overturned. Since the fight was in Brazil, with no regulatory commission, the UFC served as the regulator of the fight. They announced that they have no plans to change the fight to a no-contest.

From Marc Ratner, the UFC's vice president of government and regulatory affairs:

"Based on the referee's verbal warnings and his determination that the blows were intentional and a disqualifying foul, this is not the type of decision that can be reviewed," Ratner stated. "Therefore, the decision stands."

However, Ratner did share some good news. The UFC will start using instant replay at their self-regulated, international events, and will encourage state commissions to come into the 90s and use replay.

While it may not be the exact outcome that MMA fans -- or Erick Silva -- wants, it's still a good sign that the UFC is willing to make a change to improve the sport overall.

Yeah thatīs what we want isnīt it?

I think Mario did wrong but then again itī was a decision made fast and no man is perfect so I donīt necessarily blame him as hard as some other fans seem to do either?  I did have use my equipment at home to freeze frames and play em back and forwarth to get a good look at what was going on so therefor I could clearly see how a minimun of 1 blow hit directly to the back of the head/neck area just like Mario apparently did!

Then it can always be discussed if that was unintentional or not, I really do believe it was and that silva only tried to finish the fight according to the rule book but then again Iīm not the ref having to take that decision at spot within the blink of an eye..

No I firmly believe the human factor will always be a problem when judging but this at least could be a nice tool to figure some of the wrong decisions inside the octagon out and change them on the spot?  After all this sucks worst for mr silva and possibly even his opponent, if he have a spine that is?

I donīt understand the problem of just looking at the replay, which we clearly see that 1-2 out of 20-25 blows hit the head. None of them hit it square on the back either.

It would be so much simpler to look at the footage, realise that it wasnīt as bad as Mario thought and simply change the result. Afterall this was UFC that called the shots on this one..
Mario is a great judge and he has to act very fast so itīs understandable that you make mistakes but the video clearly shows it was the wrong decision so why not change it? Makes no sense.

Yeah misstakes have and will contiue to happen but instant replay could help at least some of the fighters get their win restored.

But in this specifik care I donīt even understand how Mario managed to se it? It goes by so fast and when played in real time I can absolutely see how most people didnīt see the direct hit in the back of the head, although when picking the video apart frame by frame it is very obvious that at least 1 is a direct hit in the back of the head.  Intentionally? I really canīt imagine it being so, Erik simply tried his best to end the fight and got robbed instead! Sad!

So 1 did indeed his it directly in a illigal place I just cannoīt remeber what frame, Iīm sure I can find it again if looking though? But it was 1 of the last blows so Mario could indeed have ment another blow completely and therefor seperated them for wrong reasons? Well doesnīt matter that much to me anyway since Erik Silva is the winner in my book either way.

Yea but donīt we already have instant replay? Everytime after a fight they show sequences of the fight. They even looked at the replay several times afterwards, Joe and Mario.

There is no doubt 1 or 2 hit the back of the head. Question is why is he got DQ:d for that when Belfort can literally take Akiyamaīs head off while heīs already knocked out.
Thereīs some inconsistency here and that needs to be fixed.

I doubt any fighter intentionally want to hit someone in the back of the head, even guys that truly hate each other. They like to beat the crap out of each other but not necessarily end someoneīs career due to them being blind or similar.

As long as thereīs some consistency iīm all for whatever decision they choose.

This bitch is for America the UFC would have to figure out a way to introduce new regulation into 45 state athletic commissions which fight change at every step.

Nevada already allows video replay, so that's one down.
Not sure about the other commissions at the moment, but the UFC usually seems to manage to get what they want.

Yeah I hear you Concept, but itīs just sad if every single one of those 45 state athletic commissions have to do it? Something is wrong with that system imo.
